With several efficient diesel engines in the range, the A4 Avant also makes an attractive company car choice. W ith the rear seats in place, the A4 Avant offers slightly more boot space than any of its premium-badged rivals, albeit still far short of the likes of a Skoda Octavia Estate or Peugeot SW.

    Also, the sloping rear screen means it isn't ideal for those with big dogs. This also limits what you can carry when you fold the rear seats down to maximise the load area. Several hooks and retaining straps are useful for keeping shopping upright, and all models come with a powered tailgate. Finally, six-footers will be more comfortable in the back of the A4 Avant than they are in the saloon, because it has a flatter roofline that leaves slightly more headroom.     Our advice, though, is to keep it simple — that is to say, a lower-end model with the standard wheels and suspension — and the A4 is a comfortable enough companion. The heating and air-conditioning controls are a highlight, with gorgeous knurled knobs that feel weighty and sturdy as they click through each temperature setting, and a clear, simple display.

As a company car, too, it is looking cheaper to tax than its rivals, thanks to a winning combination of low emissions and a low P11D value, although its advantage is small.     You can also pay extra to extend this system to even higher speeds. While most rivals come with similar systems as standard, the BMW 3-series does not. T he entry-level A4 Avant SE comes with Xenon headlamps, three-zone electronic climate control, a seven-inch colour control screen, cruise control with a speed limiter, rear parking sensors, inch wheels, a digital radio, a neat smartphone interface that mirrors your phone when it's connected via a USB cable, and Bluetooth connectivity.

    Upgrade to a Sport and you also get sport seats, satnav and an upgraded sound system, plus a wider choice of engines. Or choose the more expensive S-line for inch wheels, LED headlamps, and a more aggressive bodykit with extra lashings of chrome. For example, all BMW 3-series get integrated satnav, and Sport models get heated seats, while all Mercedes C-classes have a reversing camera. The A4 Avant is fractionally bigger than its key rivals from BMW and Mercedes, and should be cheap to run thanks to its efficient engines.
