Results 1 to 19 of Key stuck in ignition Register or Log In now! Pulled the ashtray to retrieve some debris that was preventing the cover from closing. I have done this before without a problem, however on this occasion when I reinstalled the ashtray a wire got pinched. It is the red wire running to the cigarette lighter. I relieved the pressure and pulled the fuse to cut power to the lighter. When I went to start the car I had a hard time getting it out of park, but with some random jiggling succeeded.

Now it shifts and drives fine, but I cannot get the key out of the ignition, it's stuck in position 1 referencing the manual. I'm guessing the indicator to release the key when in park may have gotten screwed up with the electric short. I've searched the forum and googled this and have yet to find any successful fixes. Thanks in advance for the help and sorry for the long post.

Maybe its the actual ingition switch? Do your brake lights work? Also, does the car go in and out of park with no resistance problems? Could be the brake light switch. There may be a slight bit more resistance getting it into and out of park.

If it's the brake light switch do you have any quick fixes for getting the key out? Yes, the brake lights work. Make sure when in Park you push the selector hard until it clicks. I had a Supra that had the same issue and if you gave it an extra firm push forward when it was in park it would 'click' and trip the safety switch telling the ignition cylinder that it was in park and release the key.

Thanks for the pointers. Trust me, I've pushed, pulled, and wiggled every which way and have had no luck. I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago after I picked up my car from the dealer for some repairs. They had to tear down the center console and it turned out there was a paperclip or something ridiculous that obstructed the shift selector just enough to have it not let the key out.

I just got the radio removal keys today and will begin some degree of teardown later tonight. I'll keep things updated just in case somebody runs into this problem down the road.

Played with the shifter and key repeatedly, but had no luck. Everything is back together and I'll have to call tomorrow. I have an extended warranty through an independent group so we'll see what they recommend. Who is your extended warranty through?

If you haven't dealt with them to much, and of course depending on who it is through, have a good "no fault" story when you call. Do not mention that you took anything apart to get your coins out, or have taken anything apart to diagnose.
