J aguar will no doubt try to tell you that its fastest selling model, the F-Pace, is a sports car that just happens to have room for five people and the ability to go off-road. N ormally, sporty-looking 4x4s like this end up with a small boot as a result of their sloping rooflines. The only slight downer here is that the door apertures themselves are a touch on the small side, which might make access trickier for less able-bodied occupants.

These are joined by well-sized door bins, a big cubby between the seats, and a decent glovebox, all of which make stowing your odds and ends easy. H ow comfortable the F-Pace is depends largely on which model you choose and the options you add. The standard car has rather firm suspension which can joggle you around on bumpy roads. This is exacerbated if you choose the larger wheel options - true to its dynamic styling the F-Pace is available with wheels measuring up to inches. Stick with standard wheels, though, and the F-Pace rides decently enough; add the optional adaptive suspension, and it becomes better still.

However, use any other mode and the 2. O therwise, the F-Pace is a quiet and collected cruiser, its tyre and wind noise kept to a respectable minimum. The touchscreen system is intuitive and reasonably responsive, and it looks great, too, particularly if you upgrade to the inch dual-view screen, which lets the driver and passenger see different functions at the same time satnav for one, TV for the other, for example.

S lim rear windows, chunky metalwork around the windscreen and big, square mirrors all make it a bit tricky to see out of the F-Pace, and it never feels less than vast. T he automatic gearbox on 2. What you do get though is a decent amount of power for overtaking.

F or the F-Pace to be at its most enjoyable to drive, you have to choose the adaptive suspension. That might not sound great, but it still places it above all of its upmarket rivals.

Its figures are as good as its rivals in most instances, if not better than; indeed, the 2. Our tests in the 2. P riced well, though lease deals not as keen as rivals. The F-Pace is priced very competitively, coming in at just a little more than the BMW X4 when compared like-for-like, and considerably cheaper than the equivalent Porsche Macan. The list of standard safety equipment is admirable, and includes all the airbags you can shake a stick at, as well as a glut of driver assistance technology, including systems which help prevent skids in straight lines and in corners.

T he F-Pace also comes as standard with a system which scans the road ahead for impending head-on crashes and can automatically apply the brakes if needed. This type of system is proven to reduce accidents, and is an optional extra on some rivals — a big box ticked for the Jaguar, then. T he F-Pace range starts with the Prestige specification, which comes with 18in alloy wheels, an 8in touchscreen, satellite navigation, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, interior mood lighting, cruise control and leather seats — plenty enough, in other words, for most people.

The range then diverges. You can go for the luxury-oriented Portfolio, which gets 19in wheels, Xenon headlamps, and adds electric seats, a powered boot lid, a panoramic roof, keyless entry, and a beefier sound system. At the top of the range sits the hot S model, which combines the sporty looks of the R-Sport with some of the luxury trimmings of the Portfolio, and is available only with the most powerful engines.

A ll of which makes the F-Pace very well equipped. It does lose out on a couple of points to its rivals — the Mercedes GLC, for example, has electric seats as standard on every model — but for the most part, the F-Pace comes with a shade more equipment than most. The Jaguar F-Pace is a great all-rounder that combines eye-catching looks with plenty of space for five, and entertaining handling.
