Steve Lavigne’s Plymouth Satellite - Hot Rod Network

Steve Lavigne has one that actually hits all those points; super rare, exceptional example, and special to him. He placed the order at Fairview Chrysler Plymouth in March and took delivery two months later. He chose the options wisely, too. Shortly after delivery, Steve installed a set of Appliance Mag wheels- the same ones you see on the car today.

Steve definitely takes care of his stuff. At the time, the Satellite served as the primary family vehicle until , when it was slid over to secondary status. Around , the Satellite graduated to garage queen and was seldom driven. Steve took the opportunity to freshen it up. With only 73, miles on the odometer, the engine only needed valve job and new gaskets and seals.

The Minnesota winters had already done some damage, but Steve repaired the rust, repainted the body with Imron. After that, the Satellite was driven only occasionally, even after a move to South Carolina in Steve mostly brought it out only for periodical drives or cruise-ins. It was after one of those cruises in when an original radiator ruptured hot coolant all over everything in sight.

Steve decided to use this as the impetus for a full restoration. This time, he decided to go completely through the Satellite, doing as much of the work in his garage as possible.

Luckily, his two sons, Mike and Mark, wise enough to get heavily involved. Steve did find some hidden rust, but not as much as he feared. He cut out the rust, made patterns, shaped custom replacement bits from flat stock, and welded them into place. After exorcising all the rust, the body was shot with epoxy primer and the real body work began.

They wanted the exterior to be slick as glass, so, a great deal of time was spent smoothing and block sanding. After aligning all the body panels. They let the paint cure for a month, then spent about hours color sanding until the finish was lawless.

In the midst of bodywork, Steve was also cleaning and restoring all of the suspension parts. The rear springs were upgraded with new main leafs from a station wagon to bolster the ride height.

The rearend was rebuilt, the fuel and brake lines were replaced, and the four-speed received new seals. The interior was in excellent condition, except the front seat upholstery, but Steve took the time to disassemble the dash for a thorough cleaning, bead blast all the electrical connections, and make new tags for the wiring harnesses.

With the end in sight, Mark and Steve installed a new vinyl top and rear glass, polished all of the exterior trim to a mirror finish, and hd the chrome parts refinished to show quality. The major resto was finally wrapped up in August , and finished product is an absolute show stopper. No one expects a Satellite to be the most impressive car at a show, but then again no one ever expects to see one this mint.
