Volvo V70 XC Reviews and Owner Comments

The inspiration behind Volvo 's newest wagon can be summed up in one word: The result was a sales bonanza; in the model's first year, over half of all Legacys sold were Outbacks.

In the auto biz, nothing breeds success like success. Never mind the lukewarm reception Volvo got when it floated a similar idea to focus groups a few years back. When shoppers are buying into the concept with hard-earned cash, who wants to waste time rehashing focus-group reports? Volvo is quick to emphasize that the sporty-looking wagon is not intended to be an off-road vehicle; rather it's an "all-road car with rugged looks," able to handle most any road or road con-dition.

Then it proudly adds that the model will "out-accelerate, out-brake, and out-handle any SUV. To create this version, Volvo turned to the existing all-wheel-drive V70 wagon and adapted it to appeal to a more active user. A more aggressive exterior treatment includes a new grille and front air dam, tougher, more pronounced body moldings, standard foglights, and a heftier roof rack. Inside, the rugged intentions are blended with a level of luxury suitable to its upscale market. Seats are upholstered with a handsome new Arctic Canvas fabric, and augmented with leather bolsters.

Standard items are automatic climate control, a power driver's seat, heated front seats, and a trip computer. Safety features include dual front and side airbags, three-point seatbelts and head restraints for all five passengers, and pre-tensioner seatbelts in front.

The rear cargo compartment boasts a number of functional enhancements intended for the outdoor enthusiast. A safety net stretches between the cargo area and rear seat to keep items in the back from flying forward into the passenger area during hard braking or a collision.

Netted pockets on either side of the rear compartment provide additional storage for smaller items. The cargo-area carpet can be flipped over to expose a vinyl backing for use when carrying wet or muddy items. And in a hidden compartment under the carpet is a vinyl cover that can be draped over the rear bumper to create a clean seating area. With a maximum of 67 cubic feet of cargo capacity, the Volvo isn't quite up to SUV specs due mostly to the lower roofline , but provides ample space for most practical needs.

For extra foul-weather versatility, ride height was raised 1. Another benefit of the longer springs, dampers, and links used for this increase is about an extra inch of suspension travel and, combined with the slightly taller tires, a plusher, more compliant ride than in the standard V This proved one of the model's high points during our initial test drive in south-central Alaska.

The suspension not only tamed normal road bumps on even the weather-scarred pavements of the far north, but was unflappable on the area's pothole-riddled dirt roads. Even at test-drive speeds few owners would duplicate, the finely honed suspension and rigid unibody kept the wagon solidly in control, with none of the dancing or wandering one might expect on such hostile surfaces. This compliance was nicely balanced with an agility and handling prowess that no tall SUV could touch.

The rack-and-pinion steering gives additional confidence to the driving experience with balanced feel, good feedback, and corner-carving accuracy one would also be hard-pressed to find in an SUV. This powerplant provides a strong launch and instant passing punch, called on frequently on the two-lane Alaskan highways. The engine feeds motive force to a four-speed automatic transmission-with excellent shift program logic-and Volvo's all-wheel-drive system with viscous clutch.
