    We've already described in detail the qualities of the rear-drive ISs, but the successes of this non-F-Sport model, saddled with extra all-wheel-drive weight, signals fundamental strengths within the car. It's somewhat puzzling, too, as the powertrain remains fundamentally unchanged from the previous IS The V-6 still makes hp and lb-ft and is connected to the same six-speed automatic rear-drive models use an eight-speed.

    Still, this hardware works well, propelling the IS from 0 to 60 mph in 5. That acceleration matches the rear-drive and naturally aspirated Cadillac ATS 3.     The transmission adapts well to aggressive driving, holding gears as the driver would through corners. Drive it sedately, though, and it shifts as smoothly as you'd expect. If the driving experience and performance numbers are solid, the exterior styling remains polarizing. Here, the separated headlights and the diagonal cut that starts on the rear door and extends through the taillights works better in black -- at least to some on staff. To others it's a mishmash of Lexus ' modern bizarre styling, which has grown more puzzling with each new model.

    There is no question about the interior's attractiveness. It shares some cues from the equally lovely GS interior, most notably the center air vents and analogue clock that form a horizontal bar that separates the infotainment screen from the controls.

    Materials and fitment look and feel exceptional, and the layout gives the car a personality and character unique to Lexus -that's a first. Seats are comfortable and supportive, though two staffers complained about a bulge on the tunnel made to accommodate the transfer case that impinged on precious footroom. One point of frustration was the mouse-like Remote Touch controller. It's neat in theory, but no more intuitive than knobs, buttons, and dials.

    Much like a touch screen, it requires your eyes to leave the road to watch what the mouse is doing and to ensure that you're selecting the right option. Worse, the infotainment system frequently hung up in our testing, sometimes just showing a black screen.

    Often, if you asked too much of it -- like, by selecting the next track on the iPod and immediately hitting the show map button -- it would lock up. The glitches and overall slowness is something we hope is won't make it to the final product. Aside from these issues, the core strengths of the IS shine through. It remains fun to drive even without the F-Sport upgrades, and its comfortable and attractive interior delivers on the brand's luxury promise.
